What is Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery?
There are multiple reasons why you might consider vaginal rejuvenation. Perhaps the skin or muscles of your genitals have lost some of their strength and elasticity after childbirth. Maybe you’re self-conscious about your physical appearance, or have discomfort or chafing in your vaginal area.
No matter what your reason, there are vaginal rejuvenation surgeries to address your specific needs.
The anatomy of the female genitalia
To better understand the vaginal rejuvenation procedures available to you, it’s important to know the anatomy of your genitalia.
- Vaginal opening: the entrance to the vagina
- Labia minora: the inner hairless lips around the vaginal opening
- Labia majora: the outer lips around the vaginal opening that grow hair
- Clitoral hood: the skin that partially or completely covers the clitoris
- Urethral opening: the opening where urine exits the body
- Mons: the upper portion of the genitalia over the pubic bone
Different vaginal rejuvenation surgeries are available to correct issues associated with all parts of the female genitalia.
Types of cosmetic vaginal rejuvenation procedures
Whether you want to restore your sexual health, correct a physical abnormality, or reverse the effects of childbirth or aging, vaginal rejuvenation can help.
Monsplasty
This procedure removes extra skin or fat from over your pubic bone or mons. While having extra padding or skin over the mons is usually painless, it can cause women to suffer from body image problems.
Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty reduces the length of the inner lips of your vagina, so they don’t hang past the labia majora. This procedure reduces the discomfort that comes from having long labia that get twisted or tugged.
Labia majoraplasty
Similar to labiaplasty, labia majoraplasty is done to correct the size of the outer lips of the vagina.
Clitoral hood reduction
Clitoral hood reduction, also called clitoropexy, is done to reduce the length and projection of the clitoral hood. You may want this procedure to reduce irritation from a protruding clitoris and clitoral hood. In addition to discomfort, some women also feel as though they have a small penis, so this procedure can also correct this appearance.
Clitoral hood reduction is often done with labiaplasty.
Vaginoplasty
This type of vaginal rejuvenation is done to correct laxity, or to tighten muscles of the vagina which have loosened from childbirth or aging. Available with both surgical and nonsurgical options, vaginoplasty leads to a tighter vaginal canal which can improve sexual dysfunction and alleviate urinary incontinence.
Vaginal rejuvenation surgery and recovery
Vaginal rejuvenation procedures are typically outpatient appointments that are performed under either general or local anesthesia. They usually take one to two hours.
Depending on the procedure you have and the amount of tissue removed, your recovery time can take between up to six weeks. You may have restrictions on physical activity for a a week or two right afterwards.
Sexual intercourse and tampon use can usually resume again after about six weeks. In some procedures, swelling can last for six months or longer.
