NeoGraft Hair Transplant: How It Works and What to Expect

NeoGraft Hair Transplant: How It Works and What to Expect

Whether you’re a man or a woman, losing hair on your head is upsetting. A woman’s hair is her “crowning glory” and part of her sensual allure, helping to attract the opposite sex. A full head of hair on a man signifies health and vitality.

If you’re a man, it’s no secret that male pattern baldness can make you look decades older than your age. If you’re a woman, thin hair can make you look as if you have an illness and are older than you are.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Baker with Lowcountry Plastic Surgery Center in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, uses the NeoGraft hair transplant method. It’s the most advanced hair transplant procedure on the market, improving upon the traditional follicular unit extraction (FUE) method.

What happens during a hair transplant

Until recently, physicians performed hair transplants using follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT). FUE means that your doctor removes hair follicles from the back of your head, where your hair is thickest, in order to transplant them. The FUT method removes a strip of your scalp and then transplants it.

NeoGraft is a more advanced form of FUE. Traditional FUE has used a tool to make incisions or micro punches in the scalp to remove the follicles.

How does NeoGraft improve upon traditional hair transplant methods?

The NeoGraft method essentially saves a step in the FUE process, making it less invasive and faster. Dr. Baker first shaves just the part of your head from which healthy follicles are taken.

Instead of making an incision with a scalpel or creating micro punches to remove the hair follicles to be transplanted, Dr. Baker uses a special wand that removes hair follicles one at a time using special suction technology. He then makes only one incision and implants the follicles in their new location, where your hair is thinning.

In the FUT hair transplant procedure, strips of your scalp are surgically removed to extract hair follicles. NeoGraft’s advanced technology avoids this painful procedure. Plus, you won’t have any linear scarring, as you would from this older method.

NeoGraft is less invasive than traditional FUE because there are no scalpels and no sutures that could damage the follicles and render them unusable. The risk of damage to a single follicle has been reduced with the NeoGraft method. This means more of your transplanted follicles will thrive and grow hair.

The cost of a transplant depends on how many follicles you have transplanted, so the more follicles that survive, the more hair you’ll have for the money you’ve spent. After the procedure, your scalp is a good host, identifying cells as belonging in the transplanted area. Your new hair begins to grow.

Am I awake or asleep during a NeoGraft hair transplant?

We cleanse your scalp and apply a small amount of a local anesthetic. You decide whether you’d rather take a nap or be awake during your hair transplant. You can read, relax, watch TV, listen to music, or just chill out during the procedure, or we can give you a sedative.

Unlike older procedures, which took more than one appointment, your hair transplant is done in one day. When you leave, you may have a dressing on the treated areas. We provide you with post-procedure written instructions.

When will I see results from the NeoGraft hair transplant?

Four to six months after your transplant, you’ll see new hair starting to grow. You can now cut and style your hair any way you like. In the months to come, your hair keeps looking thicker and thicker.
