Microblading Can Give You the Eyebrows You've Always Wanted
There’s a saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Whether or not you believe that, one thing’s for sure: Your eyes are usually the first thing people notice about you — not just when they first meet you, but day after day when they see you at work, at social events, or just out and about. Most women spend plenty of time making their eyes look picture-perfect, and plenty of that time is spent on trying to achieve shapelier, perfectly arched eyebrows.
Few women are born with that ideal arch — and it’s safe to say no woman has brows that naturally stay manicured and neat. For women who want their eyes to look their best, getting those perfect brows means a lot of plucking or waxing, followed by lining and filling with a brow pencil. That’s a lot of time. In fact, a recent survey from TODAY and AOL found that over the course of a year, women spend an average of 335 hours — a full two weeks — just doing their makeup. And what’s worse, if you don’t have the touch of an artist, there’s no guarantee your brows will look as good as you want them too — or even that they’ll look the same as they did the day before. No worries though — you can always redo them the next day. And the next and the next and the next.
Microblading to the rescue
Microblading has become increasingly popular during the past few years as more women have discovered how easy it can be to have beautiful brows day after day. Microblading is like a semi-permanent tattoo for your eyebrows, but the ink is placed more superficially than a traditional tattoo to achieve a more natural look — like natural eyebrow hair.
During your session, each “hair” is etched into your skin individually using very, very fine needles so the result is surprisingly realistic. And the ink used in your treatment session can be perfectly matched to your natural brow hair or your skin tone or hair color. You can even choose the shape and thickness of your brows so your look is completely custom and ideally suited to the what you want to achieve.
How microblading works
Microblading begins with the application of a topical numbing cream so you’ll stay comfortable throughout the procedure. Before the applicator even touches your skin, you’ll spend time with your practitioner at Lowcountry Plastic Surgery to determine the shape and fullness you’re looking for, and your brow outline will be “mapped out” on your skin.
Once the “design” part of your appointment is complete, the practitioner uses the microblading device to expertly etch each individual “hair” into your skin in just the right place for a natural-looking result. Because each fine hair is drawn individually, the process takes some time — about two hours or so for the whole session, including the brow design consultation.
After that initial session, most women come back for a touch-up session a few weeks later. By that point, any redness or mild scabbing will have resolved and your final results will be easier to see. During your touch-up session, your practitioner will fill in any areas that aren’t quite as dark or full as you’d like and make any other minor modifications to ensure you get the results you’re looking for.
As far as long-term results, most women schedule a retreatment every year or two. Remember, although microblading does use some of the techniques of traditional tattoos, these are not the dark, severe brow tattoos of the 1980s and 1990s. The natural-looking results use a lighter, more superficial technique for a semi-permanent result, which is why occasional touch-ups are needed to maintain your results.
