How to Thicken Your Eyelashes
Do your eyes look washed-out in selfies and other photos? Having long, thick eyelashes can make a difference in your facial appearance.
If your eyelashes seem shorter and thinner in recent years, it’s likely because they are shorter and thinner. Unfortunately, that’s part of the natural aging process. The good news is that with modern technology, you can do an end run to reverse it and regain thicker, fuller eyelashes.
Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jack Hensel Jr., at Lowcountry Plastic Surgery Center in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, can provide a prescription treatment for your eyelashes that stimulates eyelash growth. Our own “eye center,” the Charleston Microblading, Lash, Brow & Botox Bar, provides a suite of aesthetic procedures to give your eyes a more dramatic appearance.
Treatment to thicken your eyelashes
After Dr. Hensel reviews your medical history and health condition and clears you to use the treatment, he provides a prescription for a drug called Latisse to thicken your eyelashes. He explains how to use it and answers all of your questions about the treatment.
Latisse is a prescription drug that’s fully FDA-approved to treat thinning eyelashes. It stimulates your body to grow thicker, longer, and darker eyelashes. It’s an ophthalmic solution with the same chemical as a glaucoma drug.
Doctors discovered Latisse as a treatment for thinning eyelashes when glaucoma patients found that their eyelashes were longer, thicker, and darker when they were prescribed the drug.
How to use Latisse
You want to protect your vision, so following instructions for using Latisse is all-important. If you have contact lenses, you must remove them before using Latisse and wait before putting your contacts back in.
Use Latisse before bed each night after removing makeup and cleaning your face. You’ll only apply Latisse to the bottom of your eyelashes on your upper eyelid; you don’t want excess hair growing where it shouldn’t be. Use a tissue to remove any excess solution.
The Latisse bottle tip must remain sterile and shouldn’t come in contact with any object. If you develop an eye infection, make an appointment with your ophthalmologist, who is the correct expert to treat eye conditions.
How long does it take to see a difference in my eyelashes?
You need to use Latisse every night for at least two months to achieve the full effect of the medication. If you discontinue using Latisse, your lashes will eventually return to their previous appearance.
Effectiveness of eyelash thickener treatment
Doctors who have participated in clinical studies of Latisse found more than a 100% increase in eyelash thickness, a 25% increase in length, and an 18% increase in darkness. They report that most patients have success with the treatment. The studies have reported itching and redness in the eyes in only 4% of patients.
When to check with your ophthalmologist
Do you have glaucoma, macular edema, or eye inflammation? If you have these or another eye condition, check with your ophthalmologist before using Latisse.
