Breast Lift versus Breast Augmentation: Deciding Which is Right for You

Breast Lift versus Breast Augmentation: Deciding Which is Right for You

If you’re considering breast surgery because you’re unhappy with the appearance of your breasts, it’s time to make an appointment with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jack Hensel Jr. with Lowcountry Plastic Surgery Center in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Dr. Hensel consults with you about your goals and explains which type of breast surgery would be right for you. Breast augmentation and breast lifts are two of the most common.

Breast augmentation increases the size of your breasts

You may still remember comments or teasing from high school days when the term “flat-chested” referred to you. On the other hand, if you’ve completed giving birth and breastfeeding or lost weight, you may be left with smaller breasts.

If you’ve always had small breasts and wished they were larger, or if your breasts have shrunk from breastfeeding, Dr. Hensel can perform breast augmentation surgery to give you larger breasts. Your new breasts are going to better match your overall weight, height, and body type. If you’re barely an A cup size, you may want a B or C size. Doctors generally recommend not to exceed two cup sizes to ensure your breasts are in line with your other body proportions.

Together, Dr. Hensel and you decide about the size, shape, and type of breast implants you’d like. You have options of silicone gel implants or saline Natrelle implants. The shape of your chest wall, your body size, and your goals play into this decision.

To perform a breast augmentation, Dr. Hensel makes an incision under your breasts or around your areolas. He places the implant on top of or under a major breast muscle. He lets you know which site is going to achieve the best results for your body type.

For many women, breast augmentation surgery changes their degree of self-confidence, image of themselves as a woman, and their perception of their sexuality.

A breast lift changes the shape of your breasts

If your concern is primarily sagging breasts that no longer have a youthful, perky, upright shape, Dr. Hensel recommends breast lift surgery. The type of surgery for your breast lift depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed.

Dr. Hensel explains in detail where he needs to make the incision. During breast lift surgery, once skin and tissue are excised, Dr. Hensel moves your areola and nipple into a new position. Now your breasts are in their new, more youthful position on your chest.

Breast lift with augmentation

If you’re dissatisfied with both the shape and size of your breasts, Dr. Hensel can perform breast augmentation at the same time as a breast lift and place implants in your breasts to make them larger. He shows you an approximation of how your breasts will appear after surgery.
